Hello,

I just stard using Cmadrill and it works great! Ver easy to use. Espacially in combination with creating a template in mailchimp and sending it to mandrill to use as a template!
I have one question. Registration mails end up in the commerical folder/tab of gmail (I don't exactly know the folder name in english in dutch it is reclame's...)
Without using cmandril it ends up in the inbox of gmail.

I had the same issue while registrating myself on this website :) I couldn;t find my registration mail because it ended up in the commercial folder. I don't look in that folder all that much so I thought registration didn't work. I'm afraid the same will happen to users that try to registrate to my site.
Is this something I can change?

[edit] I think it is the "promotions" tab in english ;)... where the mail ends up

Just googled a bit and found an article about newsletters ending up in the promotions tab. There they stated that mail with pictures in it usually end up in the promotions tab. I just replaed it with plain text (h1) and it worked :) maybe a good tip for other users!

Hey Erwin,
I just sent a question to the mandrill guys about that. The way I see it - there is nothing wrong with mandrill. The email doesn't land in the spam folder -> this means it is not treated as spam. Obviously google has some algorithms in place to determine what to do with legitimate emails.
It's annoying as I got some emails from users telling me that they didn't get the registration mail and when I looked at the mandrill stats - the mails were delivered. Later those users found the email in the promotions folder. I doubt it that it is only the image that triggers the flag to add the mail to the commercial folder. There have to be more factors...

Regards,
Daniel

So, here is the reply I got from mandrill:

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for getting in touch! Gmail's tabbed inbox has been the topic of much discussion recently as ESPs and other senders attempt to learn how Gmail is filtering emails and determining which tab to route messages to. For more information, I highly recommend reading over the following blog post on from one of MailChimp's delivery engineers: http://blog.mailchimp.com/how-gmail-tabs-affect-your-email-marketing-an-update/ As covered in that post, it does appear that Gmail's tabbed interface has increased some measures of engagement with commercial emails. If users are seeing those messages go to the promotions tab and don't want them there, the best bet is going to be to encourage them to move those messages to the inbox manually. Additionally, adding the "from" address to the recipient's contact list can help encourage those emails to be passed to the inbox.
Not all emails sent through Mandrill get marked as promotions, but Gmail is the one that decides whether mail goes to a specific tab, and they use a variety of criteria to determine that. That criteria is not available to senders, and Gmail is subject to change their criteria at any time. As a result, while they can test variations of their emails to see whether certain content is causing it to be sent to the promotions folder, it's generally not possible to completely prevent that from happening. Tabs are a still a relatively new feature in Gmail, so we expect that the criteria can and will change as Gmail and Gmail users get more accustomed to the tabs.
