Hoover's debut novel, the New York Timesbestseller Slammed, was self-published in 2012. Her first novel to be published by a traditional publishing house was Hopeless in December 2012. To date, Hoover has published sixteen novels, with several more planned for 2018.
In 2011, Hoover self-published her first book, Slammed. Written for NaNoWriMo 2010, the manuscript was edited by a professional editor and beta read(free) by several authors and friends. In February 2012 it received an honorable mention in Kindle Book Review's Best Indie Books of 2012 Awards.
After reaching Amazon's bestseller list twice within the first month of its release, Hoover signed a publishing contract with Atria Books for both Slammed and Point of Retreat. The books were republished by Atria in December 2012 and January 2013 respectively with new cover art, interior formatting and minor edits made by Atria's staff. The original self-published versions are no longer available on online retailers other than through resellers like eBay.
