Weeding a backyard garden may be one of the most dreaded tasks a gardener faces. Since it’s so unpleasant many gardeners will put it off for weeks, which allows the weeds to grow out of control, increasing the amount of work that will have to be done. The reason weeds are so frowned upon in the backyard is since they soak up the good nutrients your plants need to grow strong and healthy. There are different ways to weed your garden, but let’s take a look a probably the most popular: Hand weeding.

How handy Weed Your Garden
Few gardening projects are as satisfying as removing every last weed from a row of vegetables or a bed of flowers. If you schedule the job so you can do it in nice weather, weeding can even be enjoyable.Be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands, and have a roomy pail or wheelbarrow handy to carry away the pulled plants. If the weeds you pull aren’t holding seeds, you can leave them on the soil surface as mulch.

Buy a Dandelion Digger:
Buy a dandelion digger, which has a sharp, notched end that will pry up stubborn weeds with taproots. You can also buy weeding tools with hoe-like blades and short handles, which are good for slicing weeds off below the surface.

Water Before Weeding:
Water before weeding. Weeds are easier to pull with their root systems intact if the soil is moist. Also, neighbouring plants are less likely to be damaged when the soil is damp.

Take it All:
Take it all. Be sure to remove any part of your weed that can regenerate. Some weeds, such as quackgrass and bindweed, have buds on their roots that can grow into new plants.

Sprinkle Salt on Weeds:
Sprinkle salt on weeds that sprout in paved areas or wild patches. But don’t use it around desirable plants, due to the fact it can injure their roots.

Pour it On:
Drench weeds growing up through the cracks in paving stones or bricks with boiling water. Some old-time gardeners insist that water from boiled potatoes is even more effective. The safest way to carry boiling water is in a teakettle with a capped spout.

Some people love weeding by hand, digging out their backyard weeds. But is it such a great idea? In some circumstances probably not as it can lead to further weed growth.

In brief
The old adage of “a single year’s seeding means seven year’s weeding” is not far from the truth. Many seeds lie dormant in the soil for several years. Some, such as poppies, remain viable for decades and will germinate when moved to the top inch or so of soil.

To dig or not to dig?
Digging out weeds can therefore be a mixed blessing. On the positive side you finish the day with a clean surface and you have removed lots of weeds and roots. The action of digging with a fork will also aerate the soil and allow you to introduce organic matter.

On the other hand, the soil movement will have brought lots of weed seeds to the surface where they will soon germinate. The digging action will also have chopped up the roots of perennial weeds – such as couch grass, bindweed and ground elder – possibly spreading their coverage.

To hoe or not to hoe?
Hoeing is an effective way of dealing with small and annual weeds.

Hoeing is really only effective if the ground is already clear of large weeds. Going through clean beds every week with a push hoe or Dutch hoe is a great idea. The action will disturb the annual weed seeds just germinating and cut off any new or fresh growth from perennial weeds. However, the physical cutting through the soil with a hoe can also damage the feeding roots of your flowers and vegetables you are trying to grow, so great care is needed.

Always hoe lightly, without going deep into the soil. In fact, this is hoe a hoe is meant to be used – just skimming on or under the soil level.

Weedy ground and weedkillers
If the ground is already weedy, probably the best answer is to first use a suitable chemical weedkiller to kill the existing vegetation.

There are many weedkillers to choose from depending on the area where your weed is growing and the types of weeds you’re killing – annuals or perennials. These weedkillers can really take the backache out of weeding.
