Is it possible (and is there documentation anywhere) to subscribe users via com_cmc but from another Joomla component, either directly via the Joomla API or POSTing data via a cURL request?

Have been trying cURL but with no joy, clearly I'm doing something wrong. I'd rather do it in PHP, within my method at a particular trigger point, than an AJAX call.
