This is possible with the old templates - try one of the MT templates.

I don't understand this answer. Are you saying if I want to keep the joomla template I am using there is no way to let the user open this window? ( www.buoyantlife.net .) Or are you referring to a joomlacomment template somewhere?
thanks

disregard previous post. I kept reading the forum and figured it out. I hope you will change the "modern" template so the editor is closed though. Or make open/closed an option.
thanks

ok, actually I am still confused. I have now added your comments component to two different sites:

www.buoyantlife.net , where I had to use one of your older templates so the editor is not open by default

www.pycboating.org , where I had the same problem on some pages (so I also used an older template, but on other pages I see a red and white button inviting me to comment, which then opens an editor. This was true before I changed the template, and the editor that opened was the newest one until I changed the template.

examples of this are on the sailing events and music pages.

Are you able to tell me what is going on here?

thanks
Lee

What?

Change the JoomlaComment template to MT-slide or something like that and hit save. Just like magic you now have a slide-open comment box. That's all there is to it.

This was true before I changed the template, and the editor that opened was the newest one until I changed the template.

That makes as much sense to me as a fly-screen on a submarine door. If you're still having trouble grasping this, try rewording your question.

sorry I confused you my friend.

see the attached pix

I resolved the open versus closed thing a couple of emails ago. Question here is why some pages have this red link and others the blue one.

The line you quoted was pointing out that the red one originally linked to your new editor (which as Daniel pointed out is preferable). But since the other pages just had an open editor I changed the template/

But I still have some of the red links, and am still wondering why.

also wondering why the "delete all" button, which I don't see on my other site, and who sees it. I don't want some joe schmoe deleting all comments.

finally wondering if the new editor will eventally open and close.
thanks
Lee

The 'delete all' only appears when you are logged in as a administrator. If you log out it should disappear.

Hmm I think I know what you mean now. Unfortunately it's a little technical, so bear with me.

The 'Full Comment' box, like on the second picture, is the article view. This is where JoomlaComment does it's magic. But the first picture, is like a 'Blog View' or 'Category View'. You have to actually "enter" the article in order to get past that "Write Comment (O Comments)" text.

Does that make sense?

In that first screenshot, is that using the standard Blog View or Category View component? JoomlaComment can only display one Comment box at a time - this is why it is restricted to the Article View. You have to click-through to the article to get it, by either clicking the article title ("Black Panty Race" in this example) or by clicking the "Write Comment (0 Comments)" link.

Before you ask, is it possible to show the comments on this 'Sailing Events' section/category without having to click through? Sadly, no. I would say it's planned for a future release, but to be honest I have no idea if or when it will come around - i think it would need a huge ammount of code and could slow down even the fastest servers when there are a lot of articles displayed.

You will have to experiment with adjusting your site to get what you want, there is nothing in the JoomlaComment settings that can do this.

On the bright side though, I have been experimenting with new ways to display comments via JavaScript to "slide out" the comments from Blog View of articles. It has been tricky so far though, and will probably be exclusive to the Premium JoomlaComment Templates that we have been working on.

got it. thanks.

those pages are Articles » Category / Blog

A little messy, but I guess it works. Still better than another one I tried.

For my money the ideal system (in addition to having these work the same way) is for posted comments already open right under the article, with a button/link under that that opens an editor to add another comment.

I appreciate your responsiveness. Much better than most technical forums.

I agree. Specifically, it'd be best to show only the first 5 comments (for example) with a link 'Show More...' underneath it. Clicking it uses AJAX to "expand" more comments, loading them only if the user clicks it. So it expands to 10, then the user can click again to expand to 15... and so on. Reason being is, well if an article has 100 comments that will be a lot of scrolling :P but also, it would reduce load on the server. Each web page would take AGES to load and there would be thousands of SQL queries per second :laugh: it'd crash even dedicated servers on busy sites (big websites like YouTube and Google are actually several hundred servers working together as one).

Anyway, yeah. It's unfortunately a very very complicated process, especially the part to make it compatible with all browsers. That's the reason why we'd like to keep it for Premium JoomlaComment templates (they will only be 5 euro though) because it's been such a headache to make it work fast, efficiently and compatible with all browsers.

Hopefully it will come soon, if you are interested. Well, let us know if you have any more questions ;)

yes, you are right of course about opening them in batches.

I'll look into your premium service.

One other question in the meantime that has surfaced on another site. On this page

www.buoyantlife.net/index.php?option=com...cle&id=92&Itemid=100

the comments widget is affecting my spacing (note crowded text next to map) and stopping the right hand navigation widget from expanding, which it is supposed to do via the arrows.

Obviously a spacing issue.

Can I reduce the size of the comments gadget so it's not competing with the other parts of my layout?

This is a problem with your Joomla Template, JoomlaComment isn't interfering with it at all as far as I can see.

But it's easy to fix :)

1) Open this file in a UTF8 text editor such as Notepad++:
/templates/gk_car_magazine/css/joomla_classes.css
2) Go to line 202 where you should see:
img.caption {
  margin:0 0 3px !important;
  width:auto !important;
}
3) Edit the margin paramter, where margin: {top, i.e. 0} {right, i.e. 0} {bottom, i.e. 3px} {left, i.e. auto default} so you want to make it something like this instead:
margin:0 8px 3px !important;
...which would put a space of 8px to the right of all pictures within your articles from now on (8px looks good to me)

Easy peasy :)

Oh about the right-side thingimy-bob, i'm not too sure why that's not working. I dug a little deeper though and it looks like you/someone edited your Joomla site and made a big mistake...

Error #1:
Warning: Expected ',' or '{' but found '}'. Ruleset ignored due to bad selector.
Source File: http://www.buoyantlife.net/templates/gk_car_magazine/css/template_css.css
Line: 486
...examing that part of the CSS file I found this...
div.moduletable_clear div.moduletable_content{
	margin: 0;
	padding:0;
}
div.moduletable_leadstory
div.moduletable_lead2}

style1.css (line 446)

Something has corrupted that. style1.css (line 446) looks like someone accidently hit 'Paste' in their text editor (lol) and div.moduletable_leadstory and div.moduletable_lead2 are just... well that's wierd and I have no idea what is supposed to be there, you'd be best to restore this file from your most recent backup as there is definately missing data.

Error #2:
Error: Fx.Style is undefined
Source File: http://www.buoyantlife.net/templates/gk_car_magazine/lib/scripts/template_scripts.js
Line: 14
I have no idea why this is happening, I think it is a conflict with MooTools. You'd be best to contact gavick.com for help with that as I don't know why it is happening. It may be the fact that you are using an MT (MooTools) template in JoomlaComment - try switching to a JQ (JQuery) one for now while we help nail this down.

And those are the only two errors your website is generating as far as I can see. Try to get all that done and test, let us know when you've had a go and if it works :)

I'll look at the errors, and experiment with the changes you suggested.

But I can tell you already from my tests last night that the problems disappear when I turn off comments.

That leads me to think that reducing the width of the gadget might also solve the problems.

In Firebug I see settings for the two main parts of that module of 100%. Resetting the nav part to 90% (or whatever) makes it shorter, but the comments bar doesn't seem to shrink in the same way, probably because of the settings within the editor.

To do that I guess I would have to go through the edit line by line?

here's a pix of the page with the comments turned off.

With comments still on I tried changing the caption space, but it made no difference.

I didn't even realize the caption was hidden. I was just referring to the space to the right of the picture, not the caption which is below it. In any event the prob goes away when the comments are turned off.

On the template errors, those are no doubt mine. I was trying to create and position two new modules. Will clean up the code. But I don't think that's the problem. Again the problem disappears when I turned off the comments.

I will continue to try adjusting settings all around. As one option would like to shrink the comments box. (see prior email). How could I do that?
thanks

oops. forgot to mention re right hand gadget.
see how in the pix one of the arrows is now green? that indicates more choices are available. Clicking on the arrows now slides in the new choices.

Hmmm...

OK so.... could you give us a summary of what errors you are now experiencing? The spacing to the right of the picture is fixed, and the slider box on the right is working again, yes...? So what's next? :blush:

dunno what you are asking. everything works if comments is turned off. I've already told and showed you I have formatting problems when it's turned on. I'm looking for the ability to edit the size of the comments gadgets to see if that fixes the problem. alternative right now is to drop comments or find another comments extension that doesn't conflict. I think it's all about spacing.
