Why do you want to chmod the folder to 777?

normally with filezilla you have to right click the folder -> permissions and ready.

But if you can not change permissions to 777, perhaps this is a restriction to your ftp user?

Well, if you have ftp access to your site you can configure joomla to use it, so you won't have to fight with file ownership and permissions.
