Hello, I have searched for answer here, if I am repeating a question, please forgive the redundancy and point me to the posting :-)

I am using Joomla!1.5.8, legacy, with CB1.1

I installed latest version of Joomla Comment - and like it except for one thing! We can't submit comments when the CAPTCHA is set to ON.

In Firefox - there is NO image at all - so it just keeps asking for input of the image and we can't submit.

In IE - the image placeholder is there, but no image. Again, unable to submit comments.

The directory on server is CHMOD 755, the files within, including images and captcha.php are set to 644.

Using PHP 5.2.6. GD (2.0.34) Support enabled , FreeType (2.2.1) Support Enabled

I currently have the Captcha set to OFF - which is leaving us vulnerable for spammers!

Thanks for any help - this is a live site, a specific community site in our city.

Michael

I will need an admin account and link to your web site so I can test myself. From your explanation I believe that when tryting to make the picture the script get "internal server error", but I need a link.

Gd library setup and install on whm cpanel:

Connect to ssh with root access and write these commands

/scripts/easyapache

And select 5

...wait for install to complete, a few minutes. Test Joomla Comment. After doing the above my comment form was displaying the captcha image.

I have still not solved this problem. I have tried CHMOD permissions on files & folders to various settings (755, 777 and 644) and nothing seems to work. The files are all there. But the display of the image just isn't happening. I don't claim to understand error logs, but looked at what was there in my Cpanel Error logs, and it says there is a file that doesn't exist - yet it doesn't say which file. And all the files DO exist.

So I'm stumped.

For me, Joomla Comment began working when I recompiled the Apache server with Image Manipulation (the GD library). I recommend updating Apache from Web Host Manager (WHM) for the wizard templates that will enable you to also select mod_suphp.

Change all the file permissions permissions you want. If the files that render the images are missing, you won't see pictures until you correct the real issue, which may be that Apache is compiled without Image Manipulation.

Working now - I'm sorry I got sidetracked and forgot to write the answer here.

It was a (simple) permissions problem. I had tried setting permissions on all files and folder in the Comment folder, including the comment folder itself.

HOWEVER - the MAIN Components folder in the site was set to 777. As soon as it was set to 755, the Captcha is showing.

I don't know how that folder got changed, or if it had always been 777, but for anyone else having the problem, be sure to check this folder's permissions before going through the headaches I went through.

Thanks for all your help.

components - 755
com_comment - 755
joscomment - 755
captcha - 755

If it is still not working look at the error log file.

Hi everyone,

I have the same issue.

I've checked the folder permissions and they are all okay.

Sorry Mike I don't understand your solution - can you explain it for a newbie - thanks!

Regards,
Karen

P.S At the moment I've changed the settings so that the captcha is turned off but all comments are moderated and that works fine for now.

Well, most probable the captcha is generating an internal server error. So please check the error log for more info.

Or perhaps the GD and freetype libraries are missing?

I couldn't find an error on the error log.

How do I check if the GD library or freetype libs are missing?

Regards,
Karen
