Hi John,

This are error messages outputted by the joomla installer/framework.

Are you actually able to install other extensions on your localhost???

No, I cannot install any extensions. The other extension I am trying to install is jDownloads.

At the Joomla forum they said it was a permission or file ownership problem but never gave any guidance about how to solve it. Their final advice was:
"Installing 1.5.24 on localhost and see if you can install Extensions on that. If you can't then there is something altered on your system. But if you can then that would be strange. Because if you can install 1.5 and it has no Ownership issues then neither should 1.7"

You can see the whole thread at : forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=615&t=670921

What might be altered on my system? I did uninstall Joomla and the entire LAMP server and start over with a fresh localhost and Joomla 1.7.2. The new error message reads:

Warning: Failed to move file!

I won't be hard to download a Joomla 1.5, install it and see what happens with it on the sample data.

I thought someone, somewhere might have had the same problem and be able to point me in the right direction to fix it and learn something. Other than installing extensions, I haven't had any problems with Joomla 1.7.2 on my localhost LAMP server.

I am developing a website for a local non-profit group. Everything is ready to go public except they want to be able to solicit comments and offer reference files to visitors. I can't demonstrate how this is done locally because I can't install the extensions.

I have used your older free version of comments on my personal website ( jcharper.net ) for several years without any problem.

This isn't a Compojoom problem but if you could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Hey John,
I'm happy that we have now a common ground to stand at and we both know that the problem is not the extension, but your server configuration. (I don't like it when my extensions are to blame for something :D - this is not the case so I feel really relaxed now :))

Back to your server. Can you give me a little more information? Are you running joomla on your localhost? What is your OS - linux/win7/vista/xp/macOS?

As suggested on the forum - it seems to be a file ownership problem. Maybe talk to your host about it? Or perhaps enable the FTP layer?

Daniel -
The fine people over at the openSUSE forums helped me get the LAMP server file ownership problems solved and a password set for MySQL (Joomla 1.7 requires a password so the old default won't work).
Your extension installed perfectly when that was done.
I created some animosity over at the Joomla forum by posting the thread link that helped me get set up. If you would prefer not to have links to other forums, just delete it. Here it is:
forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technica...sions-ownership.html
I include it only be helpful to others, not as a criticism.

Thanks for sharing your solution. I'm glad that everything is working as it should now.
Cheers,
