I am migrating a 1.5 Joomla site to 1.7. It's complicated to get it all right but so far it's working OK. I have about 380 comments total on the site and it would nice if I could migrate them too. I've installed the new Compojoom comments OK - thank you - and I have an idea of how to migrate comments. First note that the original 1.5 site is still running - the new 1.7 site is on a separate URL (for now). What if (using PHPMyAdmin) I exported comments from the old site, did some fancy footwork to make sure the content ID was correct for the new site then imported the SQL into the new site's MySQL table? Is there any problem with this? Or am I stuck starting afresh with comments?

Hey John,
Hm, I actually thought that Matias's upgrade extension is handling this. But yea - just copying the databases should be enough. No problem with this...

Cheers,
Daniel

Thanks for the response. The problem is that the migration creates a new database but with different categories. All articles have the same id but because the category structure is different, some articles end up in new category id's. Anyway, the comments were not transferred in my case anyway. Maybe it's because you need a new version of compojoom on 1.7. I've finished migrating and cleaning up but I'm going to "start again" on comments. Most comments get stale anyway. If anyone else is planning on migrating, be aware that because the old default templates are quite different to the new ones, you will either have to tolerate quite a lot of mediocre formatting or get stuck into quite a bit of css tweaking - which is not too bad if you understand css. There was also one bug in 1.7 (RSS feed is broken but a fix is available). If you have a simple site, the format tweaks may not be needed. The new version of Compojoom installed easily and seems to be fine. I'll see how it goes when I get some real comments!

Ok, I didn't know that categories are changing when you move the site.. JUpgrade must handle this somehow. Will have to speak to Matias about it. (I'll have to upgrade compojoom to 1.7 :), so it is good to know that it won't be that easy as I thought!!!)

And what is with this comment: "you will have to tolerate quite a lot of mediocre formating" ??? The new templates are 100 times better than the old ones..

What is the bug with RSS? I'm not aware of it?

Cheers,
Daniel

The RSS problem is fixed by the fix at Joomla.org under the heading "1.7.0 Syndication module broken" at docs.joomla.org/1.7.0_Syndication_module_broken But it took a while for me to recognize it needed fixing. I used the beez2 template and it is certainly better than milky-way but the spacing between lines in several places was too high for my liking, tables did not respect "cellpadding" so I used a class, and custom html modules were even more awkward with these issues. I also could not make the page class suffix work. However, overall I am pleased with the end result. 1.7 has a number of benefits that are small yet add-up to better usability.
Maybe the category issue was just with my particular situation - the biggest way it shows up is in Google. Old Google links go to non-existent pages even though I'm not using SEO optimization just like previosuly. I was going to use SEO optimization on the new site but found that when it was implemented, old links to local video files did not work. This meant embedded You-Tube videos worked and images worked but not flv videos. Strange. This was fixed by disabling SEO optimization. I possibly could also have fixed it by re-inserting the hundred or so videos.
I trust this info helps others.

I still don't really understand what joomla's rss has to do with compojoomComment's rss? I mean once you enable the rss in compojoomComment you get a button in the comment view - by clicking it you get your rss results. It is not in any way connected with the joomla module.

Also you are talking about tables - the templates distributed with the component don't use tables...

About the links - perhaps use the redirect component in 1.7?

Sorry, the RSS I'm referring to is the Joomla one not Compojoom's. And the tables I'm referring to are ones I use for tables like you would in WORD - not layout tables. These would be for tables showing a poll result or similar. I have not had any problems with Comments - other than the migrating issue which is not a problem with your software.

hahahah John!!! :)

I was all the time thinking that you are talking about some problems with the comments.

Thanks for sharing that info, hopefully it will help other users migrating (they will know what to expect :))

Cheers,
Daniel
