Hi everyone,
Has anyone else on this site had sudden trouble with large volumes of spam? I'm suddenly getting loads of spam from .eu domains and it occurs to me that it started just after I created and account and posted to this site for the first time.
It could be a coincidence and I know that CompoJoom take peoples privacy seriously so there are no accusations here or anything but can anyone confirm if e-mail addresses are hidden from other accounts ? The privacy text on the site suggests that I can tick a box on sign up to make my account private but I don't remember seeing that box and I can't seem to find it to change it in my profile.
Its my own fault for using my real address on a forum and not a generic antispam one but I would welcome any advice.
thanks
Carey

Hey Carey,
There is no option to make your profile private. What privacy text are you referring to?
But this doesn't mean that your account is public. The only part of your account that people see is your Name: "Carey". They don't see your email, purchased subs or address...
From my own experience - I don't own an account that doesn't receive thousands of spams per week. I don't know how they do it, but they somehow manage to find out each email. It's either by hacking other people's inboxes and scanning the messages and address book, or by hacking websites and getting access to the users table... Once someone gets your address it is being resold on the "black market". A year ago I received a spam mail letting me know that if I want 3 000 000 email addresses of American users I can pay 150$ to get them...

Kind regards,
Daniel

The text I read was in the privacy policy here compojoom.com/privacy-imprint but probably I was just mis-reading what the text meant.
I think I understand now and thank-you for the clarification.
You are right that the spam could have come from anywhere, I had managed to keep this one account safe for a long time but maybe its time to change address or put some better spam filtering in.
thanks again
Carey
