Hey I've installed 4.0 on my joomla site and I've got a few problems with the Readon Button

- The Readon Button only appears on pages where the format is set to "Blog" or "Frontpage" is that correct? How would I change it so that the button appears on every format? - Single Article view, Category view, etc?

- I'm having problems with the padding in the actual button itself. In the attached image...its a bit off. I've looked in the template CSS to find the readon section to edit, but I can't seem to find it. Is there a place where I can edit the readon button CSS?

Thanks!

Hey there!
Go to extensions->joomlacomment->content settings->layout and read about the readmore options.

I suppose that you have selected to show the joomla readmore button in blog view and that is why you also see the write comment there.
You should tell joomlacomment, that it should not take in account your specific frontpage, categories, sections or article settings for readmore.

About the second problem - your template most probably uses a background picture for read more and it is too small for the write comment text.

You have 2 options - open the joomlacomment template and change the readmore class to something else, or make a bigger picture for readmore.

Daniel;

I've managed to change the readmore button to make it a bit longer so that the second problem doesn't happen anymore.

However, with the first problem, I've tried to go to

extensions->joomlacomment->content settings->layout,

and changing the various options, but I can't seem to get the Write Comment button on every page other than those pages designated in blog view or on the frontpage.

Here's a screen of my current settings.

Also, when you say "Select to show the Joomla readmore button in blog view", how do I change it to all views? I'm assuming that's not with JoComment but rather with the actual Joomla platform itself?

check only if Read ON set in menu to no and then the write comment link should start to appear.

oh nvm I was looking around the forum and I found this reply

"If you get the full box to write the comment then you have opened the article. You have to go to the category blog layout or start page layout to see the line "write comment".
Do you understand what I mean?"

that was my initial question, do I need to be in blog or frontpage layout to see the write comment button (Just the button) - I guess I do. See I have the box open already on article pages and I don't want the box, just the button. So in article view you immediately see the box.. And there's no way to change this?

If not, I'll just deal with that, but ya, thanks!

Hey Stephen,
There is a big understanding of this issue and is mainly related to the fact that the users are new to joomla and doesn't understand how it works :)
Here is my explanation - you don't have to pay me for this, but if you wish you are welcome :D

There are 3 ways to control the read more button in joomla.
1st - article manager ->settings -> here you can choose if the read more should be generally turned on or not.
2nd -> on meny level- > you can choose for your frontpage entry or blog entry if it is allowed to show the read more button.

and 3rd -> when you write the article on the right you have an option to show or hide the read more or not.

So here is the importance of this settings:
1st: article manager settings
2nd: menu entry settings
3rd - article settings.

Basicly what the option "if Read ON set in menu" tells you is that - when you have set the read on button to show in menu settings, then you will also see the read more button.

what I think that you've done is:
on your blog menu entry -> you've choosen in the settings to show the read more button.

but on your frontpage menu entry -> you've set this option to hide the read more button and that is why you don't see the write comment button.

Do you understand it now?

Daniel, If you don't receive any payment you should at least get a thankful and timely reply for the excellent and detailed last post in this thread. I've looked in a lot of forums in the past few months and you don't often see plugin developers giving out tips on the basics of how Joomla works.

I've just started with the Joomlacomments plugin - working on over riding the various layouts to move where the read more (wite comments) link shows up and looks and I'm not where I need to be yet but will get there - installing and implementing this plugin was a breeze and I like what I see so far. - Ben

Darn - Sorry I was away for a bit and this thread totally slipped my mind. Good thing I had email notification on so thank you Ben for posting; but that's still no excuse for my rudeness.

Daniel - Thank you for the reply. It was very detailed, but still did not help me with my issue. I would pay...but I'm not even out of high school yet and am unable to set up any electronic payment without my parents being notified and subsequently punishing me.

However, back to the case - I've been using Joomla for quite a while now and experimented with how to control the read more button. I've checked and rechecked all 3 ways that you've mentioned, before and after you pointed them out in that post. I'll post 3 screen shots of each way and hopefully you'll catch a mistake that I've been unable to find.

1st - Article Manager

2nd - Menu Entry
i32.tinypic.com/znx73p.jpg

3rd - Article Specific Entry
i25.tinypic.com/2agkbra.jpg

All 3 are fine and should show the read more button, but when I go to the frontend article, the box is still there. I can't find the solution to this problem even though everything checks out. Or does it?

See what I'm thinking is that the Menu item has to be either Blog or Frontpage - not the "Single Article" menu that I have currently. If that is the answer, then that clears everything up, I just need to know if I'm correct or not.

Thank you.

Thank you for the kind words guys! I remember starting with Joomla 4 Years ago(first it was mambo :)) - nearly all of the questions I asked got an answer, that is why I felt in love with Joomla. One of the questions that I had back then was - how to disable the read more button on frontpage :)

Stephen you answered your question with your last sentences:

See what I'm thinking is that the Menu item has to be either Blog or Frontpage - not the "Single Article" menu that I have currently.

You have mixed the terminology. Frontpage is a view of the com_comment component.
To have a read more button you have to actually show the teaser text(the intro text) - there you get you read more button. If you article is already open there is no way to show a read more.

You can do something like this(look at compojoom's frontpage).
Make a new menu entry using the com_comment view frontpage.

Then publish only this article you want to see there on the frontpage. Give this article as much intro text as you wish and now when you click on the new menu entry you've created you should see a read more button.

Stephen, are you wondering how to make the 'Write Comment' button appear in Article View instead of all the Comments/New Comment form straight away?

If so, this isn't possible right now - only what the Slide templates can provide is (a 'popup' form on a new comment).

We've gotten a lot of questions about that, but i'm not sure how it could be implemented. Should it hyperlink to a completely new page with just the comments listed? In a popup perhaps?

Ah excellent, I see now =) You both answered my question just then haha. Ya I was wondering about the article view and I had the suspicion that it wasn't able to be shown with the article fully open, so there's the answer!

Hmm if lots of people have been asking about it, then I guess I'm not the only one.

Both suggestions that you have Jonus are good ones - new page and popup. If they're possible, one or the other would be fine. Like I said before, there's not particularly a rush - the component is excellent other than that one problem which is quite minor. I just wanted to know if it was currently possible to have that button instead of the box on every page.

Other than that, both my questions have been answered - thanks =) When I'm older and if you guys are still dev. this project, I'll be sure to donate =P
