Hello!

I tried searching around this site, but was unable to locate any instructions on how to import Wordpress comments.

If you could point me in the right direction, that would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Davide

Umm... you would have to do it manually. This isn't the scope of JoomlaComment or Compojoom - we don't provide CMS Cross-Conversion services because it is a very time consuming thing to do. You would need to manually copy and edit database rows for every comment, and there's no such program to do such a thing - a new software script has to be created every time :S

Since I do have personal experience in handling large amounts of data conversion, I can only say that I could try and produce a JoomlaComment database table from your old comments - for a price. I would have to write a very detailed AWK script to parse the entire database. So it really depends if it's worth it for you. How many comments are we talking about roughly? If it's only a few hundred then the manual way is best. If it's a site that's years old and has possibly hundreds of thousands of comments however... then manual transfer would be crazy.

Hey Jonus! Always trying to market your services :D:D:D:D
I think that there is an easier way!
In the backend of joomlacomment you will find an import tool. There you can do a manual import - which means - you can choose the table, and then map the ids, names, comments and everything that joomlacomment needs - then you can just klick import and the comments should be imported. This means that the wordpress comment tables should be in the same database as joomla. Try it - if you have any problems you are welcome to share your database with us :) I'm sure jonus will do it for free as a punishment, because he didn't think of the above option :D:D:D

Hey - you are right, I had no idea you had a Manual Import already - I should have checked this out! But yes, if you would like a hand and don't mind sharing the database with me, send me a PM and i'll be happy to do a import on a test site ;) it'll be quite interesting to see how JoomlaComment handles this advanced feature.

Thank you for the info, and the offer of your assistance. I might ask for help if I am unable to successfully do the import myself. Once I get a test site set up I will give it a try and let you know.

Do you know if there is any documentation/reference material on how to use this import feature? Or is it pretty straight forward?

Thank you!

Hey Davide :)
You know, we developers always think that everything is straight forward, but we are often wrong. If you have any problems, don't hesitate to ask.

Surprise! I ran into a problem trying to attempt the import of comments. It appears that JoomlaComment is not able to import comments from an external database file. Yes? It requires that the source data either be from another component, or from the working Joomla database. From what I can tell, I don't think this will work for me, because;

1. In order to import post from wordpress into Joomla, I use a converter tool, which does not convert the comments.

2. Thus, the working Joomla database on my dev site currently does not contain the comments.

3. Thus, I [think] I need to be able to import my comments from an external database file (ideally, directly from the Wordpress export)...I think.

I hope that makes sense?

what is the problem to import the tables with the comments to the database?

You joomla tables probably have a prefix jos_ and your wordpress has another suffix, so a collision is not possible

Good news. It worked!

There is just one little quirk that I had to figure out. After importing the comments table from the wordpress database, you have to rename the table from wp_comments to jos_wp_comments (or anything beginning, with jos_) in order for JoomlaComment to be able to see the table in the drop-down list on the import page.

Other than that, it was very easy.

Thank you!

This doesn't work for me

I get this error message.
Import cancelled ! Comments imported from lqqd_comments and for com_content ALREADY EXIST !!

In the "Import from table" - wp_comments (lqqd_comments) table
Commented component value (obligatory) - I left com_content by default
That just select the post id and comment id tables...

Any ideias?

Exit, Davida managed to make it with joomlacomment 4.0beta2, obviously you have to do some more experimenting and you will find the write combination for import.

What I see is that you didn't choose a colum for text and title - that is why the comments are empty :)

Hummm, there is a column called text, didn't see that, many thanks!

Sometime you are looking soo many time for a certain thing, that you already can really see anything!

Solved, and working like a charm.
