TOPIC: Add a Read More to long comments?

Is it possible to add a Read more to really long comments?

When i first was testing this out I noticed if I posted a really long comment it would be cut off according to the settings for the plug-in. When it cuts it off though there is no way to read the rest of the comment. What i was wondering if we can implement some kind of Read more for the comments themselves so you could show a certain amount of the comment by default then if the comment was longer then that and you wanted to read it you could click Read more and open up the full comment.

Right now once the comment is cut off, there is no way i can see to view the entire comment.

I'm using the Modern Template and JoComment 4.0 beta1. Joomla 1.5.14

Well, the easiest was to make this will be javascript that will shorten the text.

I don't know when it is going to be ready, because I have to write several plugins and prepare the next release, but perhaps JonusC will be interested to give you an example how the js should look like.

I'm not sure I understand. Couldn't you use the 'Read More' seperator in the Article Editor to choose where it gets cut off then change your article view parameters to show all your articles as intro text only?

Which plugin is doing the cutting here? And why can you not read the rest of the comment? It's obvious you're using a feature that i'm not familiar with isn't it

Remember there are two things here. tTe article itself and the comment that is being added to it.

There is nothing wrong with reading the article itself. It's the comments. For example go in and leave a comment that is say 3-4 pages long. Only the first part of the comment will be shown (As dictated by the settings). The rest of the comment is cut off with no way to view the rest of it. You can always read all of the article.

You can't add a read more into a comment itself. That's what I am suggesting being added.

Oh I see. Re-reading your original post makes complete sense now, I don't know why I didn't get it first Well........ why would anyone allow a comment with such a length anyway? Comments are supposed to be short!

But I guess for the reasons of JoomlaComment being flexible (as it can nearly act as a "mini forum" as it is already with such power) this should be implemented. It will probably be a template-specific addon though if I decide to do it, but I can help with adding something to the modern template here and now .

I always thought that, with a character limit in the backend, JoomlaComment would abort submission if a new comment was over the limit - I didn't know it would cut it off without warning. In my new templates i've put a JavaScript "ticker" that counts and shows how many characters are left in real-time, and will actually stop the user from going over that limit.

But this is indeed useful if the administrator wants a huge or unlimited character limit.

I've got an easy idea of how to do this already, but it's not valid XHTML and I don't know how to "re-hide" the expanded comments.

Let me take a look at the 'Read More Comments...' unfolding button first. I need to research a few things. When I figure that out, i'll take a crack at this one

Meanwhile can someone tell me how to increase the limits for how much of the comment it shows? All I can find is a parameter under content settings > layout that controls the length of previews.
