Do you consider it stable enough for live and active sites? I'm looking forward to turning off Legacy mode in 1.5.

Different users have had different rates of success so far. Some have massive headaches, some have it perfect. Most of the problems seem to be related to incorrect PHP settings/permissions, strange or 'restrictive' server configurations, or otherwise exotic attributes of their webpage - such as Joomla templates breaking JoComment stylings (or vice-versa).

Best I can suggest is to try it yourself and see. Make a backup/mirror of your live site and install it somewhere else - possibly locally with XAMPP - and you can do extensive testing there to see if it'll work with your live site well without breaking anything.

EDIT: You can use the JoomlaPack extension for Backup/Restore of Joomla installations, it's great for this type of mirror task. See the thread where I talk about it here - compojoom.com/forum/6-bug-report/4882-ma...age-link-broken.html
