I'm using the mySSlideBoth-emontop template on a test site, trying to configure as I want it before moving to a live site.

Looking at the index.htm file, it appears the java script that controls the expanding/hiding of comments is right there:
<script type="text/javascript">
	function JOSC_afterAjaxResponse(action) {
		switch(action) {
			case 'show':
			case 'response_reply':
			case 'response_edit':
			case 'response_quote':
				JOSC_ShowHide('','JOSCSHstretcherFORM',''); /* open */
				return 0;
				break;

			case 'hide':
			case 'response_editpost':
			case 'response_posted':
			case 'response_approval':
		    	JOSC_ShowHide('','',"JOSCSHstretcherFORM"); /* hide */
				return 0;
				break;
			case 'hidePOST':
		    	JOSC_ShowHide('','',"JOSCSHstretcherPOST"); /* hide */
				return 0;
				break;
			default:
				return 0;
		}
	}
	if (window.document.URL.indexOf("#josc")<0)
		JOSC_afterAjaxResponse("hidePOST");

	if (window.document.URL.indexOf("#CommentForm")<0)
    	JOSC_afterAjaxResponse("hide");
</script>

Which of the values here needs to be changed so that the comments are automatically expanded when the reader opens the page?

Thanks!

Nevermind... found it myself...

Change:
if (window.document.URL.indexOf("#josc")<0)
JOSC_afterAjaxResponse("hidePOST");

To:
if (window.document.URL.indexOf("#josc")<0)
JOSC_afterAjaxResponse("show");

Hope this helps someone else
