How To Fix Skipping Sewing Machine Stitches

Skipping stitches is one of the most common sewing machine problems.

While tangled bobbin thread will stop you from sewing immediately, your machine skips one or two stitches might not sound like a big deal.

This issue comes in the form of a few skipped stitches between nice and normal ones, or just one troubled stitch on a whole project.

No matter how minor it seems, this problem should not be ignored because it indicates a malfunction with your machine. The longer you leave it unattended, the more severe it might get.

Most of the minor sewing machine issues can be fixed by re-threading the machine. However, skipped stitches are not like that.

How To Fix Skipping Sewing Machine Stitches

Change the needle and the thread

The main culprit here is the needle. Many experts recommend changing to a new needle after every project to make sure you always work with a straight and sharp one.

Your needle might be bent without you knowing it. It might bend so little that you cannot detect the problem with bare eyes. Sometimes the needle has a dull point or a nick in it. Whatever the cause, skipped stitches may happen if you don’t change the needle right away. Fortunately, the needle is something you can buy without paying through the nose for it.

Most sewing machines nowadays are designed with few complications so attaching another needle to the machine will be no problem.

What I want you to bear in mind here is to use the right needle size for your machine. The wrong size and type of needle is another cause of skipped stitches.

It’s a rule of thumb that most sewists learn by heart, which is to use a stretch or ballpoint needle for knit material, sharp ones are for woven fabric, and leather needs its own kind of needle for the best result.

Choosing the right needle (and of course the right tension) and even the https://i.imgur.com/isUCTij.gif best sewing machine for beginners can handle these special materials. Change the needle and thread when your sewing machine skips stitches

Not only the needle, but the thread is also something sewists should care about. Good quality thread results in better-looking projects and fewer troubles for your sewing machine.

Adjust the thread tension

If you have changed the needle and the thread but the problem doesn’t go away, it’s time for the last remedy, adjust the needle thread tension. I said this was the last solution for a reason. Balanced tension is the most important factor in producing even seams.

I don’t recommend you adjust the tension knob too much unless you know what you are doing. So if you have tried everything and nothing works, this is the time to think about tension.

If you see the upper and bottom stitches are different from each other, that’s another sign to check the tension. I want you to do this slowly and with the test. After each time you change the tension setting, try to make a few lines on a piece of scrap. Do this until you satisfy with the result.

I always recommend inexperienced sewists to consult the manual before attempting on the machine’s tension knob.

Or if you have a sewing machine with an auto tension controller, let the machine do its job.
